GameStop just announced that its board unanimously approved adding Bitcoin and stablecoins to its treasury, following in the footsteps of companies like MicroStrategy. The company updated its investment policy, allowing them to use corporate cash and future debt or equity issuances to purchase Bitcoin and USD stablecoins, with no ceiling on how much they can buy. Following the news, GameStop’s stock surged 6.3% after hours and climbed another 14% the next day. As of February 1, the company held $4.8 billion in cash and plans to use this move as part of a strategy to revive and transform the company. Meanwhile, the $GME memecoin is riding the wave too, up 27% today with a $17.5 million market cap. Full circle moment, as $GME really was the first meme coin on the stock market.
