YEAR IN REVIEW🫡

Wow, the greatest year for memecoins and crypto just wrapped up, and it is extremely challenging to tackle the biggest stories of the year, so Im just gonna write what I remember. Starting off, here are some of the best stories/trends/metas of the year.

$PENGU – A Rapid Ascent

The memecoin for Pudgy Penguins NFTs soared into the Top 5 by market cap within days, as it wrapped up a great year for memecoins.

$AI16Z – AI Meets Memes

This AI-driven DAO token reached a $1.4B market cap, fueled by the AI-blockchain buzz. The AI Meta was the biggest trend of this latter half of the year, as coins like $GOAT and $FARTCOIN dominated the memecoin markets.

$PNUT & $MOODENG – Tokens with a Cause

$PNUT, honoring a rescue squirrel, while $MOODENG, inspired by a baby hippo, saw a boost from Vitalik Buterin's donation.

From Iggy Azalea to Jason Derulo, 2024 saw celebrities flooding the meme coin space, turning Pump.fun into a veritable Wild West of crypto. Yet, rather than producing market icons, most celebrity tokens ended in chaos, lawsuits, and plummeting values.

  • Big Launches, Bigger Falls: Jenner’s Ethereum and Solana tokens peaked at $42M but now sit below $500K combined. Derulo’s JASON token? Down 97.8%. Waka Flocka Flame's FLOCKA? A near wipeout with a $204K market cap.

  • The Arora Effect: Crypto promoter Sahil Arora emerged as the mastermind (or villain) behind many of these projects, pocketing millions while celebrities like Jenner and Derulo claimed breach of contract.

  • Rare Bright Spots: Iggy Azalea’s MOTHER token avoided total collapse, partly due to her engagement and knowledge in the space. I mean, she spoke at Breakpoint Solana in Singapore, so she def for the trenches!

  • Legal Backlash: Lawsuits are piling up. HAWK TUAH had the worst launch in history, probably one of the biggest stories of the year. Will she get sued for insider trading though?

WHY MEMECOINS THRIVED!

Crypto—and particularly memecoins—thrived in 2024 for three key reasons:

The Pump.fun Phenomenon
For most of the year, Pump.fun carried the memecoin market on its back. Solana memecoins absolutely dominated, and the platform's user-friendly approach to coin creation was a game-changer. Over 5 million coins were minted on Pump.fun, with 492 of them reaching market caps above $1 million. The sheer ease of creating coins on the platform turned it into a breeding ground for innovation (and chaos).

The Launch of HYPE
