Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road online marketplace, was pardoned by former President Trump after serving over a decade of his double life sentence. Ulbricht had been convicted in 2015 on charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, and engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. The Silk Road platform, active from 2011 to 2013, allowed users to buy and sell illegal goods such as drugs using bitcoin, generating over $200 million in sales. Prosecutors alleged Ulbricht operated the site under the alias "Dread Pirate Roberts" and accused him of soliciting murders, though no evidence of actual killings was ever confirmed.

Before the pardon, a memecoin named after Ulbricht briefly surged to a $43 million market cap as speculators rushed to capitalize on the news. However, the token quickly collapsed, shedding 90% of its value and dropping to a $2.7 million market cap.
